Unity Technologies announced Unity 7, described as the next generation of the Unity Engine, with keynote announcements spanning the engine, monetization, and collaboration tooling. The features and capabilities described are still in development, and Unity states actual results and availability could differ materially from current plans.
Matters for: Relevant for studio leads and technical directors planning long-term engine roadmaps for mobile-first and indie game production.
Unity 7 introduces a modernized CoreCLR-based core with near-instant Play Mode, targeted domain reloads, and shader builds up to 90% faster, plus a new CLI and public API allowing artists and producers to validate assets and push builds without full Editor access, and a free MCP connecting coding agents directly to Unity; it also adds Surface Cache GI for realtime global illumination and Unity Vector, an AI engine for Unity Ads monetization. The upgrade from Unity 6 will not require rebuilding projects, learning a new language, or breaking existing work.
Matters for: Relevant to game studios integrating AI coding agents into production pipelines and teams distributing titles across both high-end PC and mobile hardware.
