Major releaseBreakingSep 22, 2026
Astro React integration switches to Oxc, adds compiler

The React integration now uses @vitejs/plugin-react v6 with Oxc for JSX and Fast Refresh, and adds an opt-in Oxc-based React Compiler option that memoizes client components and hooks (server rendering is not compiled). The babel integration option has been removed, so projects using custom Babel transforms must install @rolldown/plugin-babel and @babel/core and move their plugins/presets into vite.plugins using the babel() plugin instead of react({ babel: ... }).

Matters for: Relevant to teams maintaining Astro projects with custom Babel transforms such as babel-plugin-styled-components, and to those on React 17 or 18 who need react-compiler-runtime to use the new compiler option.
